Samplab chord detection software and more

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRqmaIyaA9c I came upon Samplab when looking for chord detection software. It did that better than others I'd tried. But as I got looking around their website, I discovered there was much more to it that looks very cool. Samplab presents itself as an “audio editor for musicians,” but that description undersells what it’s actually doing. The real shift is conceptual: it treats audio as something you can compose with , not just edit. At its core, Samplab breaks audio apart into musical elements—notes, chords, timing—and lets you manipulate them the way you would MIDI. That means a recorded phrase is no longer fixed. You can move notes, change harmonies, correct or intentionally distort pitch relationships, and reshape performances without re-recording anything. It’s a move away from destructive waveform editing toward something more fluid and musical. One of its most compelling features is note-level editing on polyphonic audio. Instead of isolating a single melody line, Samplab can interpret complex material—chords, layered instruments—and allow you to adjust individual notes inside that structure. That alone changes how samples can be reused. A loop is no longer locked to its original key or mood; it becomes raw material. Chord detection and MIDI export reinforce that idea. Samplab doesn’t just tell you what’s happening harmonically—it lets you interact with it. You can pull chords into a MIDI environment, revoice them, or reapply them elsewhere. Combined with tempo and key matching, it becomes much easier to bring unrelated sounds into alignment and make them feel intentional together. Stem separation pushes things further by isolating drums, bass, vocals, and instruments. Instead of treating a sample as a single object, you can work on its internal layers. This opens the door to remixing, restructuring, and hybridizing sounds without needing original multitracks. But the most forward-looking piece of Samplab is its Resynthesizer . This is where the tool stops being an editor and becomes something closer to an instrument designer. The Resynthesizer analyzes an audio sample and rebuilds it using a synthesis engine. The result is a playable, flexible version of the original sound—something that retains its identity but is no longer bound to its original recording. In practical terms, that means you can take any sample and turn it into a chromatic instrument. A vocal fragment, a percussive hit, a found sound—all of it can be mapped across a keyboard and played musically. More importantly, you can reshape it with synth-style controls. Instead of EQ and compression, you’re adjusting harmonics, smoothing or exaggerating transients, adding drive, filtering, and sculpting the sound at a structural level. The Resynthesizer also allows you to separate and manipulate different aspects of a sound, such as tonal content versus percussive attack. This gives you a level of control that traditional sampling doesn’t offer. You’re not just layering effects—you’re redesigning the sound’s internal makeup. Another creative dimension comes from its ability to blend sounds. By morphing between two sources, it creates hybrid textures that feel organic but unfamiliar. This is less about fixing audio and more about generating new sonic identities—something especially valuable for experimental or texture-driven work. What makes all of this cohesive is that it fits into a modern production workflow. Samplab runs as both a standalone application and a plugin (VST3 and AU), so it integrates directly into DAWs rather than replacing them. It becomes a layer in the process—a tool you reach for when you want to rethink what a sound can be. Taken together, Samplab reflects a broader evolution in music creation. The boundary between recorded audio and synthesized sound is dissolving. Editing, composing, and sound design are no longer separate stages—they’re happening at the same time, inside the same tool. Samplab doesn’t just make audio easier to edit. It makes it easier to reinterpret.
